Enjoy a fascinating evening tour of Florence’s Accademia Gallery with an expert and passionate guide in an exclusive small group of no more than six people. You will enter the gallery after the large daytime crowds have dispersed for the day, enabling you to enjoy the halls of the majestic Accademia in a quieter and calmer atmosphere.

Your tour begins with many of the gallery’s other highlights – including the famous statue Abduction of a Sabine Woman by Giambologna, as well as the dazzlingly opulent, solid gold altarpiece The Coronation of the Virgin by Jacopo di Cione. Next, you’ll visit the Hall of the Prisoners to see the four unfinished torsos by Michelangelo. Often called The Slaves, because they look like they’re trying to escape from their marble prison, they give us an incredible insight into Michelangelo’s technique and possibly reveal something of his innermost feelings.

Your guide will tell you all about the life and accomplishments, personality and legacy of Michelangelo. Famous from a young age for the sculpting of the Pietà then David, and of course his extraordinary endeavors in the Sistine Chapel, he lived to the ripe old age of 89. It is no overstatement to say that his life and work changed the course of art history forever.

Michelangelo created David in just three years at the age of 26 from a famously impossible, granite-hard slab of marble that had proven too much for several previous sculptors. Inspired by the face of Apollo and the colossal statues of the ancient world, David – with his handsome face and muscular beauty – has mesmerized the world for over 500 years.

Your guide will reveal the many political secrets and layered meanings hidden in plain sight in the statue, and tell you all about Michelangelo’s work ethic – wearing the same clothes and boots for days, skipping sleep and meals, with his single-minded focus and determination. As he once said “No one would call me a genius if they knew how hard I worked.”

In an almost empty hall, you will have the freedom to wander around the whole statue. Then, when you’re ready, you’ll exit the gallery into the beautiful, lamplit streets of a Florentine evening.

On that same note, you may also find yourself on tour with less than six people! We thank you for your understanding and flexibility.
