Enjoy a fascinating private evening tour of Florence’s Accademia Gallery—including Michelangelo’s David—with with a passionate guide.

Entering the gallery after the large daytime crowds have gone, you’ll be able to wander through the hushed halls of this magnificent museum, enjoying a far quieter, calmer, more exclusive, and private experience of its world-famous works of art.

Your guide will show you some of the gallery’s highlights including the mesmerizing statue Abduction of a Sabine Woman, by Giambologna (which would later inspire the Baroque genius, Bernini) as well as the astonishing, solid gold altarpiece The Coronation of the Virgin, by Jacopo di Cione. Then, you’ll enter the Hall of the Prisoners, which houses the four unfinished torsos by Michelangelo. Called The Slaves, because they look like they’re trying to escape from their marble prison, they give us an insight into Michelangelo’s technique as a sculptor, and even hint at his own, inner thoughts. Your guide will tell you all about the life and accomplishments, personality and incomparable legacy of Michelangelo, who lived to 89 years old (an extraordinary feat for the 16th century).

Michelangelo was just 26 years old when he started work on the colossal piece of hard Carrara marble that had eluded the skills of many previous sculptors. Armed with his own, hand-made chisels, he took just three years to finish David, or as he said: “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”

David has captured our imaginations for five hundred years with his handsome, wistful gaze, his slender, muscular elegance, and his natural ‘contra posto’ stance. Your guide will regale you with the many political messages embedded in the statue, as well as the stories of his misanthropic and often unhygienic creator! You will also have the freedom to wander around the whole captivating statue, unencumbered by the crowds, before exiting the gallery and wandering out into the romantic lamplit streets of a Florentine evening.
