Begin your private tour of Vienna’s magnificent Belvedere Palace with a scenic stroll through the stunning formal gardens to the Upper Palace. Here, your privately guided tour through an impressive art collection spanning 800 years will begin.
The Belvedere Palace is a vast palatial complex that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was designed in the grandiose Baroque style in the early 18th century and includes exquisite formal gardens. It was built as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy, who was born in France and grew up in the court of Versailles under the Sun King Louis XIV. He then left France for Austria, and went on to become one of the most successful military leaders of his era, serving three Holy Roman Emperors. His Belvedere Gardens were designed by a disciple of Andre Le Notre – the landscape architect at Versailles, and bear some resemblance with magnificent water features and statuettes of nymphs and goddesses.
The extensive art collection is housed inside the Upper Palace, which is itself a work of art – both outside and in. Your guide will take you past the line to go straight in and explore this glorious museum. Walk along fine parquet floors, crane your neck to take in the total splendor of the many chandeliers glinting on the golden, gilded frames and frescoed ceilings, with their accomplished trompe de l’oeil effects.
The permanent collection includes highlights from the medieval period, an enviable collection of the Viennese Modernists, and the star of the museum, Gustav Klimt. Learn all about his life and art as you gaze at his exquisite masterpieces, including “The Kiss.” Alongside Klimt, you’ll see beautiful works by the French Impressionists, including Monet, Van Gogh, and the sculptor Auguste Rodin. Your tour ends inside the museum so you can continue exploring at your leisure.
