Berlin was founded around 1200, in the Old Quarter now called Nikolaiviertel, and by the 18th century had become one of Europe’s leading cities in terms of power, education, and the arts.
The city is a layered mixture of beautiful historic buildings – like the ones you’ll see at Gendarmenmarkt. Widely acknowledged as the most beautiful square in Berlin, it is home to the twin French and German cathedrals and the concert house.
You’ll walk into Bebelplatz – famous for St Hedwig’s Cathedral, the historic and prestigious Humboldt University (that has produced 30 Nobel laureates) and the notorious book burning on May 10, 1933 in front of the former Royal Library.
Your guide will show you around the elegant buildings on Museum Island—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—that were once cut off by the Berlin Wall and only accessible to westerners with a visa for East Berlin. Stop by Berlin Cathedral, the Pei building (designed by the same architect of the Louvre Pyramid in Paris) and the haunting Neue Wache – Germany’s central memorial for the victims of war and tyranny.
Next, you’ll see the Berlin Palace, a reconstruction of the original baroque Prussian palace that stood for hundreds of years before being badly damaged by allied bombings in WWII and then demolished in 1950 on the orders of the East German leadership. The new Berlin Palace, completed in 2020, was the product of years of debate following German unification on what to do with this site and reflects the many currents and opinions post-reunification Berlin. The Humboldt Forum— a museum dedicated to human history, art and culture—is now housed within the Berlin Palace.
