The Duomo, situated in the very heart of the city, is perhaps the most famous symbol of Milan in the world. It is the fifth largest Gothic cathedral in the world, famous for its many spires and pinnacles, and amazing panoramic terrace views. It is also where Napoleon’s coronation took place in 1805, and it houses a sacred holy relic marked by a red light: a nail from the Cross. The first foundation stone was laid in 1386 and work continues on it to this very day over 700 years later!
You will meet your expert, English-speaking private guide outside the cathedral to begin your in-depth tour. Admire the intricate gothic exterior, filled with medieval symbolism. The cathedral has 3,400 statues more than any other building in the world: including 135 gargoyles and 700 human figures! With LivTours priority access, you’ll be able to skip the line and step inside to explore the vast interior.
As you enter, and your eyes adjust from the sunshine, you’ll be awed by the vast central nave, flanked by two sets of aisles to either side, it is held up by 52 pillars: one for every week of the year. The Duomo has had hundreds of architects, artists and sculptors work on it over the years, and your guide will show you the most important, including an easy to miss treasure: an extraordinarily accurate ancient sundial!
After your private tour, you will part ways with your guide at the elevator (with skip the line access) so you can explore the terrace at your leisure. Look up and you’ll see the famous gold statue of the Madonnina (the little Madonna – although she is 4 meters tall!)
