A Step Back in Time Just Outside Rome
This tour was an unexpected highlight of our trip. Our guide, Giulia, made the ancient city of Ostia Antica come alive with stories of merchants, sailors, and families who once walked those streets. The mosaics in the Baths of Neptune were breathtaking, and the theater was surprisingly intact. The small group size kept everything relaxed and personal.
- Sarah MitchellPerfect Half-Day Escape from the City
We were looking for something beyond the Vatican and Colosseum, and this was perfect. The train ride was easy, and Elena met us at the entrance, ready with enthusiasm and knowledge. I especially loved seeing the ancient bakery and learning how bread was distributed to citizens. It felt like we got a glimpse of daily Roman life rather than just monumental history.
- James CartwrightFamily-Friendly History Lesson
I wasn’t sure my two teenagers would enjoy a ruins site, but Marco kept them completely engaged. He asked them questions, told funny anecdotes about Roman plumbing, and even had them reenact selling goods in the forum. They still talk about the ancient latrines! A great way to learn outside the classroom.
- Amanda ReynoldsMore Intimate Than Pompeii
Having visited Pompeii years ago, I was curious how Ostia would compare. Honestly, I found this more intimate and accessible. With only six of us in the group, Davide could really tailor the experience. The mosaics, storefronts, and theater were all beautifully preserved, but what stuck with me most were his explanations of the ingenious Roman water systems.
- John FeldmanA Quiet Treasure Just Outside Rome
Ostia Antica doesn’t get the same crowds as the Colosseum or Forum, which made this tour even better. We strolled through empty ancient streets, almost as if we had them to ourselves. Our guide, Chiara, shared wonderful details about trade routes and the port’s importance to the empire. It was peaceful, fascinating, and very well organized.
- Emily TorresExcellent Small-Group Experience
With only five people on our tour, it felt relaxed and personal. Elena answered all of our questions patiently and shared some fun “behind the scenes” archeology stories. I especially enjoyed seeing the necropolis—it felt like a quiet, sacred space where history whispered through the stones.
- Michael JohnsonPerfect for History Enthusiasts
If you’re fascinated by Roman daily life, this is the tour for you. Seeing the latrines, bakery, and bathhouses gave such insight into how organized and advanced they were. Our guide painted vivid pictures of merchants shouting their wares and children playing in the streets. It was immersive and engaging.
- Rachel SteinBrilliant Tour with Personal Touches
Luca was our guide, and he was brilliant. He personalized the tour by asking about our interests, then tailored his commentary accordingly. We lingered longer at the commercial forum because my husband works in finance and loved hearing about ancient accounting methods. That flexibility made it feel very special.
- Anthony MillerThe Theater Alone Was Worth the Visit
Standing in the ancient theater that once seated 3,500 people was unforgettable. Our guide explained how performances were a major part of social life in Roman times, and I could almost picture the crowd. Afterward, we saw mosaics that looked as though they were laid yesterday. Truly remarkable preservation.
- Karen McAllisterGreat Value and Exceptional Guide
For the price, the experience was unbeatable. Matteo was incredibly knowledgeable but also approachable, weaving in humor alongside history. The story about amphorae piled up in warehouses gave me a real sense of the scale of Roman commerce. I appreciated how LivTours capped the group at six—it felt like a private experience.
