A Beautiful Deep Dive into Bologna’s History
Our guide, Chiara, brought Bologna’s medieval past to life with such passion. The Anatomical Theater was the highlight for me—its carved wooden figures were unlike anything I’ve seen before. I appreciated how LivTours balanced historical detail with a relaxed pace through the porticos. Ending in the Quadrilatero markets was perfect, especially with the smell of fresh mortadella drifting through the air.
- Daniel RoswellPerfect Tour for First-Time Visitors
This walking tour gave us an excellent overview of the city without feeling rushed. Marco explained the stories behind the leaning towers in such an engaging way that even our two teenage daughters stayed interested. The visit to Piazza Maggiore and the Basilica of San Petronio was especially memorable. We ended the morning wandering the market stalls, picking up Parmesan to take home.
- Laura MitchellA Fascinating Stroll Through Bologna’s Layers of Culture
I loved how the tour wove together Bologna’s academic and culinary traditions. The Archiginnasio courtyard and the Municipal Palace were highlights, especially with Davide explaining the symbolism carved into the walls. Walking beneath the UNESCO-listed porticos felt like stepping into another century. As a solo traveler, I felt completely comfortable and welcomed.
- Eleanor ShawEngaging, Informative, and Surprisingly Fun for Kids
We brought our 10-year-old son along and weren’t sure how well he’d handle a history-focused tour, but our guide Elena kept him engaged the entire time. He especially enjoyed seeing the massive Meridian Line inside San Petronio. My husband and I loved learning about the University’s origins and standing inside the historic Anatomical Theater. LivTours created a wonderful family-friendly experience.
- Brandon LewisThe Best Introduction to Bologna You Could Ask For
This was our first day in Bologna, and it set the tone beautifully. From the lively Piazza Maggiore to the quiet elegance of the Archiginnasio, every stop felt thoughtfully chosen. I especially appreciated the time spent exploring the Salaborsa library—it’s a treasure I would’ve missed on my own. The local insights made the city’s medieval past feel remarkably present.
- Melissa ChenVery professional guide
Our guide was very professional and shared with us his knowledge and love for this very beautiful and historic city. We particularly enjoyed seeing the city hall, famous twin towers and the University of Bologna -- the heart of the city. Wonderful tortellini, also!
- ElisaRich Culture and Food Heritage in One Tour
I booked this while traveling with my sister, and we both found it incredibly enriching. After visiting San Petronio and the Archiginnasio, we wound through the Quadrilatero where the blend of colors, aromas, and lively chatter captured Bologna’s soul. Our guide Davide recommended a nearby deli afterward, which turned out to be one of the best meals of our trip. LivTours truly delivered an insider experience.
- Bianca FerreiraA Relaxed and Insightful Morning with a Wonderful Guide
Giulia guided us through Bologna with warmth and expertise, pointing out hidden details we never would have noticed. The history behind the Municipal Palace and the old university buildings was fascinating. I especially enjoyed the quiet beauty of the Archiginnasio courtyard. This was an excellent way to understand the city’s personality beyond its famous cuisine.

The depth of historical explanation in this tour was impressive without ever feeling overwhelming. The Anatomical Theater, in particular, was extraordinary—its intricate carvings and unusual layout made it one of the most memorable rooms I’ve ever stepped into. My partner and I also loved hearing about the centuries-old rivalry that produced Bologna’s leaning towers.

Bologna’s porticos were even more impressive in person, stretching endlessly in elegant arcs of brick and stone. Our guide Luca provided fascinating details about their construction and UNESCO designation. The leaning towers were another highlight, as was the lively chaos of the Quadrilatero markets. This LivTours experience offered a perfect balance of architecture and daily life.
