To begin your private Capitoline Museums tour, meet your top-rated guide by the giant bronze equestrian statue of the ‘philosopher’ emperor Marcus Aurelius in the middle of the magnificent Piazza Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo.
Once through security, you will enter the first courtyard, which houses the instantly recognizable colossal fragments that remain from a statue of the Emperor Constantine.
Your guide will navigate you through the many and varied opulent marble halls and palatial galleries. The Capitoline Museums house a truly stunning collection of antiquities from Rome, Greece, and Egypt. You’ll see beautiful two-thousand-year-old statues of gods and goddesses; mythical figures and real people; emperors and empresses including Cleopatra, mosaics, artifacts, frescoes, and more.
Stopping by the museum highlights, the amazing stories behind each piece will capture your imagination, as they have many illustrious visitors over the centuries, including Napoleon Bonaparte. The Dying Gaul is probably the most renowned and replicated of all the statues here, and even stars in Lord Byron’s poetry.
You’ll see the original bronze statue of the She-Wolf of Rome suckling the twins Romulus and Remus, overlooked by the original giant bronze of Marcus Aurelius. A walk through the linking subterranean passage is lined with fascinating funeral stones describing the life and popularity of sportsmen of the ancient world – including a famous charioteer. Then you’ll explore the Halls of the Emperors and Philosophers, where your guide will tell you some of their life stories. You’ll see the elegant Capitoline Venus, the mesmerizing Flaying of Marcyas, and countless statues of mythical heroes, including one of the Emperor Commodus dressed up as Hercules, and the famed marble bust of Medusa by baroque superstar, Bernini.
The Capitoline Museums are situated, as the name suggests, on Rome’s Capitoline Hill. Towards the end of your tour, you’ll enjoy sublime views over the Roman Forum and Colosseum. The tour ends where you began, or you can remain inside and explore more of the museum, café, and bookshop at your leisure.
