Once the masses of tourists have shuffled out of Venice and the calm of evening has settled, you will experience a wholly different Venice: alleys that abruptly end at the edge of dark canals, deep wells in the middle of squares from days gone past, a dense fog that tends to envelop the lagoon, and Gothic palaces dotted along the dark canals. When the sun sets, Venice turns ghostly, especially as you visit the site where a child’s spirit is said to be trapped in the boutique shops.

Your LivTours’ Venice After Dark Tour starts in Campo San Giacometto. Here you will meet your local guide who will take you through the spooky labyrinth of streets and alleys. Hear stories about the dark side of Campo della Fava, Marco Polo’s house and his young, Chinese wife, and the bloody well of Corte Lucatelli and San Gallo: where one of the most terrible murders of Venice occurred.
Your tour continues as you take to the water for a 30-minute Gondola Ride with your guide. Imagine yourself silently floating through the narrow, dark canals, with only the sound of the paddles touching the water and the reflections of the glowing windows of palaces. St. Mark’s Square, home to St. Mark’s Basilica, is not exempt from sinister stories with its two giant columns used for public executions and the stunning clock tower that was made by sculptors who were later blinded – making sure they could not recreate the same beauty anywhere else. Gliding under the Bridge of Sighs, hear how it got its English name from experience of condemned prisoners. Finally, as you travel into Campiello Querini and Santa Maria Formosa, see the bell tower that was designed to scare away the devil.
With the city’s dark tales still fresh in your mind, you’ll part ways with your guide with a deeper appreciation for this enchanting, timeless city.
