You will explore the city of Berlin as it was throughout the Cold War, with an expert local guide. This is an immersive and fascinating walking and driving tour in a private chauffeured vehicle.
Your tour begins at Bernauer Straße (Wall Strip) with an in depth tour of the open air Berlin Wall Memorial Museum. This is a poignant stretch of the remains of the Berlin Wall, marked by many memorials. It showcases the grim reality of the wall and its impact on daily life. Later you’ll see the amazing East Side Gallery, the longest remaining section of the wall, transformed into an open-air gallery of political art, graffiti, and messages of hope. The tour includes a visit to the immersive The Wall Panorama experience. This offers a vivid, 360-degree depiction of what life was like next to the Berlin Wall.
Your guide will also show you the notorious Checkpoint Charlie: the most famous crossing point of the Berlin Wall and the entire Iron Curtain and the site of a dramatic standoff between American and Soviet tanks in 1961. Berlin was therefore inevitably the epicenter of the heroic and dangerous espionage that characterized the era. You’ll also stop for a view of the iconic double-deck Oberbaum Bridge. This bridge was a border crossing and is today an important symbol of Berlin’s unity.
Passing by Prenzlauer Berg and Karl Marx Avenue – the artistic, bohemian, Eastside neighborhoods – you’ll hear about daily life in East Germany, under Soviet rule. The Ronald Reagan Gedenktafel Memorial commemorates Reagan’s iconic “Tear down this wall!” speech and highlights the global call for freedom.
From Brandenburg Gate—the symbol of the division of East and West—to Alexanderplatz—the site of the protests that led to the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989—you’ll be shown around the key sites and monuments of Berlin that played a crucial role in the decades of political division between the Eastern Bloc and the NATO countries after the Second World War.
